Improve your Madden Run defense Now!
Posted on October 13, 2009 at 08:03 PM.
First let me say this is not the be all end all.As most gamers know there are several ways to be effective with run defense.Today I am going to cover manual use of the middle Linebacker(Demeko Ryans Texans) and Stuffing the run Cold.It works for Noobs as well as seasoned vets and people in between.

1)I cant stress this enough, Practice,Practice,Practice.
Find a scheme that you like and learn it well. For stopping the run I will use a 4-3 for example.

2)If you suspect a run play spotlight the RB.Then you adjust your d-line to make sure they are filling a gap(a space between the Offensive Lineman)This is covered in the manual with the game.

a. If you suspect an outside run cheat you Line to the suspected side or cheat your LB's
b.If you suspect an inside run (between the tackles) pinch the line and Lb's
c. If you are unsure but you still think it is a running play stay even and balanced with the dline and lb's

3)Once you feel your players are in position and you are controlling the Middle Linebacker (MLB)...Shoot the Gap!This means as soon as you see the ball snapped attack the Line of Scrimmage with wreckless abandon between the guards and Tackles.I'm Talking come at the Running back like you want to rip his head off.It doesnt Matter who the running back is just bring it!

Hint:If you have a top rated MLB more than likely as is the case with the Texans He will blow up the Tackle, guard,or Fullback.Ryans gets stops behind the line of Scrimmage Even when it looks like he is being blocked or out of the play. His Tackling and Block shedding skills are Amazing. He will literally shove the offensive player out the way en route to destoying the Ballcarrier.(go to practice mode right now and try this for yourself)Intentionally run into the fullback or offensive lineman and see what happens)Of course if you have a weak MLB you wont have the same results but the basic priciples still apply.

Using these simple techniques I was able to consistently shut down top running backs...too many to name but giving up 100 yards with this style of play is Rare.In fact you will find that it more than likely will leave you in great shape on third down.

Tip:If the Outside run play is suspected Cheat over to that side a few steps. As soon as you see movement sprint as fast as you can almost in a diagonal motion being careful not to overpursue.Just as you are about to make contact deliver a heaping helping of hitstick (if you like).Remember you still have outside support even if you miss.Again....Practice,Practice,Practive.

Update:It is imparative to make sure pre snap that the Middle Linebacker that you are manually controlling has either fullback or running back responsibility. This way the TE isnt wide open.(thanks Kasey).

P.S. It is a great way to discover new ways to maximize the talent on your team and in my case Demeko Ryans is "my" defensive MVP...Even when "blocked" he Still makes the tackle...Amazing....Pick your favorite Team and try for yourselves and as always remember have fun

P.P.S.After Manually stuffing the run using these simple Techniques you will greatly enhance the look and feel of your run defense...All comments welcome.

Best Regards

I'd like to add something: make sure to take playaction into account. Firing at the offense balls to the wall can have great positives, but can also leave the short middle of the field gaping wide open for easy TE dumpoffs and slants.. especially by playaction.

To correct this, make sure you watch the TE, or slot WR diligently to play solid in all facets of the position. People will try to attack this once they see the aggression.

To Kasey.True the TE May be open however There are a couple of ways to counter this.First make sure the Linebackers responsiblity is to the Running Back..You do this by highlighting the play on defense pre-snap.Trust me I worked very hard at this technique and I anticipate a play to the TE.But for run stuffing purposes It doesnt really matter if they call a play action pass because I''m bringing the Heat right up the gut and also with an Outside Linebacker. There are so many ways to mix it up it aint even funny.
